April 2, 2026
Making a custom word search is easier than you think. Here's how to create one in under a minute.
Step 1: Choose Your Words
Think of 10-25 words related to your theme. Good sources: - Vocabulary lists from a textbook or curriculum - Event themes (birthday party, baby shower, holiday) - Personal (family names, inside jokes, favorite things) - Educational (spelling words, science terms, historical figures)
Step 2: Pick Your Grid Size
- 8×8: Quick and easy, good for young kids or short word lists
- 12×12: The sweet spot for most purposes
- 16×16: Large grid for 20+ words
- 20×20: Maximum challenge with the most hidden words
Step 3: Set the Difficulty
- Easy: Words go horizontal and vertical only. Best for kids and casual play.
- Medium: Adds diagonal words. A good all-around challenge.
- Hard: All directions including reverse words. For experienced puzzlers.
- Expert: Maximum directions and word density. The ultimate challenge.
Step 4: Generate and Preview
Click "Generate" and the algorithm places your words into the grid, filling empty spaces with random letters. Preview the result instantly.
Step 5: Download or Share
- Download PDF: Get a print-ready file with your puzzle and answer key
- Print directly: Use the browser print function for quick copies
- Share link: When community features launch, publish for others to play
Pro Tips
- Keep words 3-12 letters long — very short words are hard to find, very long ones are hard to place
- Avoid words that are substrings of other words (CAT and CATERPILLAR in the same puzzle)
- For classroom use, include 20% more words than you need as a buffer for placement failures
